Redefined Elder Care: Enabled Seamless Remote Monitoring through Smart Sensor Technology

About Client

A leading digital health and technology-enabled care provider in the UK engaged iOrbit to design a solution that empowers older adults to live independently in their own homes, supported by families and carers, rather than moving to hospitals or long-term care facilities

Client’s Challenge

The client needed a way to monitor elderly individuals in a non-intrusive manner while ensuring their privacy. At the same time, they faced the growing challenge of quickly detecting emergencies—especially falls—and providing timely, on-demand support to reduce hospitalizations and improve safety.

iOrbit Solution

Existing elder care solutions often relied on content-based models or basic motion detection, offering limited support.
iOrbit’s iThingsHealth addressed this gap with an IoT-enabled, sensor-based SaaS telecare system that blends smart care logic with devices like a fall detection pendant. Designed to help seniors live safely and independently at home, it seamlessly connects caregivers when intervention is needed.

iThingsHealth used strategically placed IoT sensors, customizable event templates based on Activities of Daily Living (ADL), and real-time alerts through a Caregiver Mobile App. The round-robin notification workflow ensured no alert goes unattended, enabling timely action and reducing emergency visits. By analyzing ADL patterns, the system also supported early detection of potential health issues in older adults.

iOrbit Scope

Our scope covered the complete solution workflow:
  • Selecting reliable third-party sensors and wearables, integrating sensor and wearables with the IoMT platform,
  • Building an event template library to support Activities of Daily Living (ADL)
  • Designing an intuitive UI/UX for both the Carer mobile app and web app,
  • Ensuring secure communication and GDPR-ready compliance, and
  • Implementing robust data management for devices, events, and patient records

Key Outcomes

iOrbit’s iThingsHealth improved elderly safety with a reduction in fall-related emergencies and fewer ER visits. The solution enabled independent living through smart sensors and intelligent alerts, ensuring faster response times, unobtrusive monitoring, and measurable cost savings for caregivers, families, and healthcare providers.
